Kelly Wels "Changing Diapers" Book Review & Fuzzibunz Giveaway 1/11

The following is from the About Me section of

Kelly Wels is a leading cloth diaper expert and advocate who has a passion for helping parents make informed decisions when it comes to how they diaper their babies.

In November 2010, Kelly founded, which she calls her “passion project.” Her mission is to share her love for cloth diapers and advocate for diapering change. She says she believes that through education and knowledge, parents can be empowered to make more positive diapering choices. Kelly also is a green living promoter and social media marketer.

Kelly was previously known by her peers as the founder and owner of and, two popular online cloth diapering stores. In the summer of 2010, Kelly decided to turn her business over to new owners and pursue her advocacy passion full-time, without dealing with the day-to-day pressures of running a multi-million dollar business.

Kelly has personally been honored with a Congressional Award from Maine Senator, Olympia Snowe, who also is a ranking member of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship. The Congressional Award recognized Kelly for her success as a leading entrepreneur in Maine. Kelly also founded blog, which was recognized as a “finalist” for “Blog of the Year” by the Stevie Awards for Women in Business in 2010.

While Kelly is an advocate for diapering change, she has dedicated a lot of her energy supporting causes important to her cloth diaper passion and to her personal life. She champions awareness for organizations like the Cloth Diaper Foundation, Real Diaper Association, Cloth for the Coast and the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

Most importantly, Kelly is a mom to three children, Olivia, Hanz and Riley. She currently lives in Waterford, Maine, which she says is like stepping back in time with older homes that are nestled in rolling foot hills . Kelly spends her free time working on several cloth diapering advocacy projects, including her new book “Changing Diapers: A Hip Mom’s Guide to Modern Cloth Diapering“, loves gardening, and consults with other entrepreneurs on their social media marketing efforts.

The one thing I wish I had more knowledge of while pregnant with Madison in 2007 would be cloth diapers. Raised around disposables diapers, I just felt like it was "normal" and never gave it a doubt when I became a mother.

After McKenzie was born in 2009, she developed Eczema and with a couple days of cream it would be gone. After she turned one year old, it developed on her tushy and groin area where the diaper would sit. We tried prescription creams as well as over the counter medicines to get rid of it and as soon as it would go away, it would pop back up again.
(Full post HERE of why we switched to cloth)

I WISH I knew about this book when I started my journey of trying to research cloth diapers. You can easily become overwhelmed with which system to purchase, which company to purchase from, which closures you want, and the list goes on and on!!

I chose to try my luck at giveaways and won most of our stash and I'm glad I did because it gave me a chance to try different companies and different types of diapers, as well as saving us money because we couldn't afford the start up costs to cloth diaper full time.

I know if I had this book from the beginning, everything would've been easier because Kelly explains the different types of cloth diapers, talks about some different companies, and suggests trying multiple types of diapers as well as different brands before buying a whole stash of diapers. What works for one person or baby might not work for another and trying different types and brands can let you know which diapers fit your child the best and which system you find the easiest.

This book has taught me a lot and I feel even better about cloth diapering now because I'm more informed. I don't think you can ever learn too much about cloth and all its benefits, so if you're a first time parent or a parent that is wanting to switch to cloth, I highly recommend you pick up a copy of this book! I read the first 50 pages and sat it down for a while and then one night I picked it up, started reading, and before I knew it... I was done! This book is a very easy flowing read and each chapter is clear, to the point, and then you're on to the next chapter.

This book is a 6.5 x 6.5 paperback, has 215 pages, and is in full color.
You can purchase this book from or for $17.95

I also wrote a post on the types of cloth diapers using the images from the Changing Diapers book and you can read it HERE. I will be using this book as a reference to talk about different topics in this month of January such as cloth in day-cares, so stay tuned!

Now that you know about the book, Kelly Wels and her company have generously supplied a Fuzzibunz One Size Cloth Diaper for a giveaway! This will be for an in stock diaper so color isn't promised.

You can stop by Mama On a Green Mission who is also giving away a Fuzzibunz diaper from Kelly Wels
