How Did We Get In To Blogging?

Mama's Baby Cupcakes started September 5, 2011 with an official launch date of October 1. I had been on another blog with a fellow Facebook friend for a while, and decided that I wanted to branch out on my own and see if I could succeed as a solo blogger.

Alex first introduced me to giveaways in the Fall of 2010 so I could build a cloth diaper stash, and then eventually she asked if I wanted to work on her blog to help expand that stash more with cloth diaper reviews and other posts as they came. After doing that for a while and getting the hang of it due to her guidance, I opened Mama's Baby Cupcakes in the hopes of expanding my opportunities and reach over all with readers and brands.

The above image was the first graphic for this blog. Madison is the pink, McKenzie the purple, and gender was at the time unknown for baby #3 which we all now know is Macyn. My goal when I first opened was 2 giveaways a month and regular posts in between since I knew it would be harder to get companies to agree to working with a brand new blog.

Shortly after opening, I was able to secure prizes to host a baby event to celebrate Macyn's birth. It was so fun for me because it was something I was able to accomplish all on my own and worked with so many great companies that trusted in me and let me review for them, even though I was still new.

While I had great success from the very beginning and was able to gain so much popularity, it was also a lot to take on. After Macyn was born, I went through times where I didn't want to do much with the blog, and I had times of wanting to quit it all together.

Once I'm asleep, I feel like I sleep well. I do wake up for potty breaks, but always fall right back asleep luckily. I'm back to not waking up much in the middle of the night unless I drink a lot before bed so I'm thankful of this!

Introduction to Crafty Friday

Welcome to the new weekly posts Crafty Friday where I'll be showing everyone some snazzy little crafts I find online (and even some I've made up myself). Being a work at home mom I sometimes get stressed with the daily grown-up things so I use crafting as my temporary getaway. I'll even include crafts that the little ones can join in on!

I've been crafting since I was just a little girl, finding a use for everything I could get my hands on. My mind was so full of creativity that I felt the need to keep everything. You could have even called me a packrat. My mom would often get annoyed that I never wanted to throw anything away, but in my mind there was a new use for every old thing. I made purses from old clothes, I made new clothes from old clothes, and I even made my own lipgloss with vaseline and koolaid.

Back in those days we didn't have computers or fancy phones with internet to look up crafts, so most of the ideas I had came straight from my imagination. These days with pinterest, youtube and all of the other sites with craft tutorials, my mind is going crazy with the need to try it all! Since I do most of the crafts I find online and enjoy spending time with my daughter when we make new things, I thought I could share a few of my favorite crafts with our readers. I hope that you will join us and make a few. Maybe you could even share pictures of your finished product with us!

Pregnancy: Weight Gain

When I got pregnant with my first child I was in the 190's for my weight. I'd always been "chubby" and even at 18, I loved my size and was comfortable in my skin.

After I gained the 24lbs, I thought it would fall right back off and I'd be back to my normal weight in no time... I was wrong! I lost a lot of the weight right after birth, but with staying home and sleeping when Madison slept, I quickly gained it back and my new "normal" weight became around 215-220lbs.

Getting pregnant with baby #2 a short, 11 months later meant my body would be hit again with the weight of pregnancy. While I was nervous to gain weight before getting any baby weight off from #1, I only gained 12lbs and quickly went back to my "normal" 220lb weight my body became used to.

Each time I have another child, I'm always worried about gaining weight. While I've never tried to get in shape in-between children, my body naturally adjusts back to the normal weight its used to since having children. I've never been one to work out or try to eat healthy (terrible) but after I have baby #4, I would really love to change some habits to better my health and appearance.

I would consider myself lucky that I'm not one to gain a lot of weight. Based off the little chart above, I've always fallen in the healthy range of gaining for pregnancy, but this time around my body is really feeling the differences as I gain and grow the bundle of joy I'm carrying.

Spark Of Amber Teething Necklace Review

Thank you Spark of Amber for the necklace to help with this review

We sell authentic, stunning natural Baltic Amber Teething Necklaces and bracelets. We also sell calming Baltic Amber earrings, pendants, bracelets, anklets, and rings from SparkofAmber. Only purchase from the best! At SparkofAmber.com, we bring you the best Amber from Lithuania and the Baltic region!

The Sunrise--This stunning necklace represents the peacefulness of a sunrise.
It is calming, refreshing, welcoming!

Poor Brantley has been struggling with teething for a couple of weeks. While orajel was an okay remedy, It didn't last long and I wasn't comfortable using it after reading the ingredients. I was looking for something more on the natural side when I was suggested the Amber teething necklace.

I'll start by saying I was very skeptical of the Amber teething necklaces, yet everyone I knew had one and swore by it. But does it really work? and if it does, how does it work? This is how the Spark of Amber website explains what really makes these teething necklaces work...

"Baltic Amber is a fossilized resin. Europeans greatly prize this beautiful stone for its claimed 100% natural anti-inflammatory, pain relieving, and calming properties. The healing oils of the Baltic Amber are said to relieve teething pain, tame baby’s irritability and relieve inflammation in the throat, ear, and stomach."

"The calming properties of Baltic Amber may go a long way towards a calmer, happier child. The toddler years are full of turmoil, with lots of growth and change, so the natural analgesic of Baltic Amber is a wonderful gift!"

..sounds interesting, so I put it to the test!

First and for-most, I'd like to say this Sunrise necklace is gorgeous. It's simple and has a very natural and earthy appearance to it. Your child can enjoy this worn against the skin to get the most benefit from the natural Baltic Amber, or as an accessory to his or her favorite outfit. Amber is very light and comfortable to wear! This necklace is hand-crafted of authentic Baltic Amber “nuggets”. These amber nuggets come straight from Lithuania. Each individual bead/stone is unique and special, so the sizes and shapes of each bead may be different. Every necklace is its own unique work of art. It measures approximately 13” long.

Give A Minute, Help Make-A-Wish #StraightTalkWish

I participated in this sponsored campaign for One2One Network.

We've all heard about Straight Talk right? If you haven't, let me fill you in...

  • Straight Talk is a service provided by TracFone Wireless Inc., America’s largest no-contract cell phone provider in the U.S.
  • Straight Talk partners with existing wireless networks nationwide to provide no-contract wireless phone service.
  • Straight Talk is available exclusively at Walmart and the cost savings of not having to maintain stores is passed directly on to customers.
  • Straight Talk has all of the same great phones as the contract carries, including name brands like Samsung, Apple, Windows and LG.
  • Straight Talk offers the same networks and the same phones at half the cost.
  • Straight Talk provides service in more zip codes than any other wireless carrier and reaches more than 300 million Americans.
  • The “ALL YOU NEED” plan for $30 a month to receive 1,000 minutes, 1,000 text or multimedia messages, 30 MB of data transfer for data phones and 411 calls at no additional charge.
  • The unlimited plan for $45 a month to receive unlimited talk, text and data Nationwide anytime with calls to 411 at no additional charge.

Currently if you go to your local Walmart, you will see booths set up where you can find more information about this program and even sign your name to help them donate. My family and I were at Walmart this past weekend, and by signing just our first names, they're donating $1 per name listed. I decided to put my husband and I both down for a $2 donation. While it doesn't seem like a lot, could you imagine how much can be donated if each person walking by took the 15 seconds to write down their first name on the list?!

  • Every Saturday in September, Straight Talk Wireless will donate $1 to Make-A-Wish for each person that visits their participating local Walmart and takes a minute to learn more about Straight Talk.
  • Straight Talk will donate a minimum of $500,000 to Make-A-Wish and up to $1,000,000.
  • Believe it or not, not everyone lives near a Walmart! From now until September 28, when you share the video on straighttalkwish.com, Straight Talk will donate $1 to Make-A-Wish®, up to $100,000 (one donation per viewer, per day) towards their $1,000,000 goal. It's fast, easy and worth every second!
  • This is the second year in a row that Straight Talk will be hosting this program. Last year’s program was very successful, reaching its $1,000,000 donation mark!
  • Straight Talk believes there is nothing greater than granting a sick child’s wish. They are thrilled to be able to be part of making that happen again this year.

We've considered switching ourselves in the past, and also thought about this weekend as we were there learning more about the company. Not only do they offer great name brands products at an affordable rate, they also care about helping others. Make A Wish has always been something I've grown up knowing helps kids make their dreams come true and lift their spirits and I think its a wonderful thing that Straight Talk is so passionate about helping the cause!

Why not visit your local Walmart and help others?! Doesn't take much time and you'll feel great for doing it, as well as learning more about Straight Talk and what they're all about.

#WIN a Britax Boulevard 70-G3 Car Seat (ARV $319) 10/6

In honor of Child Passenger Safety Week, Viva Veltoro and Thrifty Nifty Mommy
are bringing you a fantastic opportunity to win a Britax Boulevard 70-G3 Car Seat!

Car crashes remain the leading cause of death for children 1-13 years old in the United States, but many times these tragedies can be prevented by the proper use of car seats, boosters, and seat belts.  Child Passenger Safety Week is the perfect time to inspect your car seat and make sure you're restraining your child in the correct seat, and that the seat is installed properly.  Britax has been an industry leader in mobile safety for over 70 years and has a full line of innovative infant car seats, convertible child seats, harness to booster child seats, and belt-positioning booster child seats to keep our little ones safe.

Ruth from Viva Veltoro had the opportunity to review one of Britax's convertible child seats, the Boulevard 70-G3.  You can read her full review of this awesome car seat HERE.

Here is information about the Boulevard 70-G3 from the Britax website:

HUGS Chest Pads with SafeCell Technology are affixed to the seat shell to ensure proper positioning while SafeCells compress to manage energy and provide resistance to the forward movement of your child in a crash, reducing the risk of head injury
EZ-Buckle System retains the harness buckle in a forward position and prevents the child from sitting on the buckle when boarding
  • True Side Impact Protection is deep side walls with energy-absorbing EPP foam along with a head restraint which offers a double layer of EPP foam to distribute crash forces, shield from vehicle intrusion, and contain the head, neck and body while keeping them “in true” or aligned
  • Base with SafeCell Technology features SafeCells designed to compress in a crash, significantly lowering the center of gravity and counteracting the forward rotation of the child seat which normally propels the child toward the front seat
  • Integrated Steel Bars strengthen the connection to the vehicle and reduce forward flexing of the child seat during a crash
  • Energy-Absorbing Versa-Tether features a staged-release tether webbing to slow the forward movement, reducing the crash forces reaching the child, and a two-point attachment to minimize forward rotation while anchoring the top of the child seat
  • Tangle-Free, Five-Point Harness distributes crash forces across the strongest parts of the body and provides a secure fit
  • 70-pound Weight Capacity for safety and comfort as your child grows
  • Rear and Forward Facing Recline for child comfort and positioning
  • High Density Comfort Foam provides an extra layer of padding to gently cushion your child
  • Plush, Easy-Remove Cover with matching comfort pads and infant body pillow to provide extra comfort and easy cleaning without disassembling or uninstalling the child seat
  • Two Buckle Positions offer a snug and secure fit for your growing child
  • Infant Positioning Insert may be necessary for small infants to achieve a snug fit of the harness around your child.
  • Quick-Adjust, No-Rethread Harness repositions the harness shoulder height without disassembling the harness straps
  • Premium Lower LATCH Connectors for a quick and simple installation featuring a push button for easy release
  • Built-in Lock-Offs ensure a snug lap and shoulder belt installation with minimal effort
  • Anti-Slip, Contoured Base grips and protects the vehicle seat while offering optimum vehicle fit
  • Harness Holders keep harness straps pulled to the sides when placing your child in the car seat
  • Certified for Aircraft Travel
  • Made in the USA with global components
  • MSRP (USD) $319.99

One lucky person is going to win a Britax Boulevard 70-G3!

Confetti Mamas Review

Thanks to Confetti Mamas for the dress to help with this review
Confetti Mamas offers clothing for women, men, and children. While a new business, their goal is to be able to offer great clothing at affordable prices in many trendy styles.

Your little one will be comfy and ever so stylish in this fun, colorful outfit.
  • Made by Zippity
  • 100% Cotton
  • Hand Wash Cold (do not soak), lay flat to dry
  • Imported
  • limited quantity

Confetti Mama's was not able to provide me with the right size dress, So Chloe (size 4) will be modeling a size 6 instead.

Chloe was sick on the day her Zippity multi-colored striped dress came in the mail, but was so happy to see it that she insisted on taking review pictures right away so she could wear it. This dress has 5 very bright colors and looks great in photographs. It fits her more as a maxi dress instead of a knee length dress since it was 2 sizes too big, but it still looked amazing on her. It was very easy to find a pair of shoes and bow to match since there are so many colors to choose from.

One of my favorite things about this dress is the how the stitching that divides each color is an opposite color than the 2 it stitches together. Chloe's favorite things are the "beautiful colors" and how it "flows like a princess dress".

New Halo Sleep Sacks for Pottery Barn Review

Thanks to Halo for the SleepSack to help with this review

Our founder Bill Schmid and his wife lost their first born to SIDS. From this tragedy, HALO and its mission were born. For over 15 years we've been educating parents about safe sleep practices and a portion of every sale goes to First Candle/SIDS Alliance and The Canadian Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths.  Since 2005, the American Academy of Pediatrics has suggested the use of wearable blankets.  Today, HALO SleepSack wearable blankets are the #1 trusted choice of hospitals, and are used nationwide to help babies sleep safely from the start.

September is Baby Safety Month; HALO will donate $1 to Safe Sleep Organizations for every new Facebook “like”

We never used any kind of swaddle or sack with our oldest, mainly because I just didn't know they were out there. With the birth of our second child came our first encounter of a swaddle sleep sack. We received one in the hospital (I believe Halo) and we didn't use it too much because I didn't understand the point of one. Once our third child arrived, so did more knowledge and interest in sleep sacks and the need to have some in our home!

Halo is currently in over 1,000 hospitals nationwide because of their Halo Safer Way To Sleep Initiative, which provides hospitals with SleepSack Swaddles to give one to the parents for their newborns. Because of this great idea, hospitals can educate parents of the risks of blankets and why swaddling can be so beneficial to a child. They also have a video on their website for safe sleep tipsHalo Innovations also offers free Safe Sleep Practices kits to childbirth educators to help further the cause of SIDS prevention.

We are lucky enough that our local hospital is one that provides swaddles at birth for your child. We're able to use them in the hospital, and extra fortunate to bring home with us as well when we left after the normal two days of hospital care. I'm excited for the birth of our fourth daughter in December because this means we'll get another swaddle!
*please note, not all hospitals allow swaddles to go home*

With the arrival of our fourth child in December, one of the things I thought about was that I get to add to our collection of swaddles and sleep sacks. I feel like they're one of the best baby items out there, and they're a must for all parents! I reviewed with Halo when Macyn was 5 months old, and we used that sack as much as we possibly could. It was perfect for her cool room in the Summer, and it also ensuried she stayed warm once Fall came around and the weather was up and down. While our youngest isn't here quite yet, I want to take the time to tell you all about the new designs from Halo and their collection at Pottery Barn.
