5 Great Drinks to Serve at Parties

One of the best ways to make sure your parties become legendary is to go to town on the catering. While food and nibbles are an optional extra, drinks can make or break a party. So no pressure! Choosing which tipples to serve can be tricky, but here's some great ideas for drinks that will keep everyone happy.

1. Classic Mojito

The classic Mexican rum cocktail is always a crowd pleaser. All you need to make your own is white rum, soda water, mint, fresh limes, sugar and plenty of ice. Get your guests involved in crushing the ice and ripping up mint, it's a hands-on drinking experience and lots of fun.

2. Craft beers
Craft beers, or boutique ales, are the true hipster drink of the moment. For a smaller gathering they are an excellent choice, and most large supermarkets have a great selection. Give your guests different ones to spark plenty of discussion about which one is best. They can be on the pricey side though, so if you have plenty of advance notice and a little bit of know-how, why not consider brewing your own?
3. Buck's Fizz
Buck's Fizz is a great welcome drink or aperitif. You don't have to splash out on fancy champagne either- a good Cava or Prosecco from a retailer like Tesco will work just as well, or you can find it ready-made. It is worth going for a good quality fresh orange to mix with, or if you're feeling adventurous try raspberry, mango or pineapple juice for an exotic alternative. The appropriate ratio is two parts orange juice to one part fizz. Finish with a curl of orange peel.

4. Summer Sangria
This is a perfect drink for summer parties and barbecues, and can be made well in advance. Swap the traditional red wine for a light fizzy white like Italian Moscato, add a bottle of flavoured sparkling water and approx 3oz of triple sec liqueur. Mix together with plenty of ice and chopped fruit – peaches, apples, oranges, limes and cherries are best. Serve over ice in long glasses.
5. Strawberry daiquiri mocktails
It is always a good idea to provide at least one non-alcoholic alternative. This one is so nice you are best advised to make a fair amount! Each daiquri requires 2 strawberries, 4 large spoonfuls of caster sugar, 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice, 180ml of lemonade and 4 cubes of ice. Whizz everything together in a blender, then pour into a jug and leave in the fridge till ready to serve.
All you need to do now is round up as many glasses as you can find, get some music on and prepare yourself for a great fun night. Cheers!
