Bonding with Baby: The Formula for Happiness™

As a mother of four, I'd like to think that I may just know a thing or two about babies. While all babies are different, it seems like most of my tricks work for all our girls and I wanted to write this post to share some bits of knowledge from one mom to another in hopes that I can help if possible!

My girls range in age from 1 1/2- 7 1/2 years old, so over time I've gotten used to the fussiness, late nights, much needed cuddles, and draining periods of not being able to leave baby's side. Below I'll share my own tricks and ways I got my girls to be calm and happy, so I hope you enjoy because the formula to happiness is a happy healthy baby!

One of the first things I do with my children after their birth is swaddles! While some children may not like them, they were beneficial for our girls and helped them feel comfortable and safe. After being in a belly for 9 months, the world can seem overwhelming, so swaddles let them feel nice and snug like a burrito, but yet it helps keep them calm and comfortable while they transition to the outside world.

Something else I like to do with my newborns is letting them feel skin to skin contact. Whether that's cuddling during a nap in my arms or during a feeding, a mother's touch is the most soothing thing I think they know, and feeling and smelling our touch can be huge when it comes to the early months.

Wearing your baby, either in a special tank like the one above or a carrier, can be such a huge benefit when babies are small. Since they always want to be close, it's a great alternative because they get what they want and need, but yet you're able to move around freely to clean, cook, tend to other children, and the many other things us mommies do!

Sometimes the formula to happiness is pacifiers! This was actually a new one for us with our children because they didn't much care for them until daughter no. four was here. She needed extra comfort to sleep and was always one to fuss a lot, but pacifiers were a life saver for us. Giving her comfort is key, and while some may not like the idea, its an easy alternative when need be.

Having fun with your baby is probably the over all no. one formula for happiness. Enjoying all their milestones, the cute little noises while they sleep peacefully on our chest, their first smiles, laughs, and so much more is very important for baby and YOU! All we want in life is for our children to be healthy and happy, and nothing beats that when they flash a big grin showing their love for you.

Let's talk really quick about parents an their formula for happiness! As mothers we're always on the clock, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. We can get run down, cranky, over whelmed, and in need of a "break". Having a great partner/father who will snuggle with baby, feed baby, and tend to their needs while we take ten minutes to ourselves is so important to ourselves. We deserve this, and what better way to ensure the formula for happiness with baby, then making sure momma is taken care of as well! Dad could even take baby on a walk outside to get them out of the house for a bit, and mom could take a nap! Those are always nice during the early months with a new baby and I highly recommend them.
